THE YEAR 2001 WILL SEE A SERIES OF FOUR PROGRAMMES FEATURING SOME OF THE INSTRUMENTS USED IN WESTERN CLASSICAL MUSIC.

What these programmes will be all about is to listen to some interesting recordings where these instruments feature prominently, and to focus on some instruments not often heard in solo. In other words, the more 'popular' instruments used in western classical compositions such as the piano, violin, flute or trumpet might not feature, while instruments such as the viola, saxophone and trombone probably will.

The programmes will not include a technical or critical review, and will not feature any formal lectures on the history or development of the instruments, and will also not attempt to explore the detail technicalities involved in the production of sound from the instruments.

These programmes will include instruments used in typical western classical music, and will not include any traditional instruments used in various parts of the world.

For the purpose of these four programmes, I have classified the instruments in four simple or basic groups, although there are other classifications which are probably more technically correct:

1)  STRINGS  -  bowed or plucked
2)  WOODWIND
3)  BRASS
4)  PERCUSSION & KEYBOARD  -  incl. strings which are struck or hammered
